When We Were Kids
Rainie Oet

Anna smuggles a hundred white doves into a movie theater, hugging them to her body beneath a padded red vest. The music swells, she unzips—and lets them fly.

Lil, in her seat, starts to cry. "They're everywhere! They're everywhere."

On screen, a cartoon snake called Boredom says, "Don't you miss me even when I am around?"

The white doves—scattered, echoing about in the dark movie theater—obscure the projection. Their little shadows block the screen, flitting about, while on the birds' wings the marvelous distorted pictures play.
