Flies
Rainie Oet

Simon sits in his car in a wooded parking lot. It's early morning. The sun is just coming up. Simon's car is the only car in the lot.

As Simon talks, years pass, marked by the back and forth passing of geese shadows in a V formation. The flock gets sparser with each pass.

"I was at a campfire in the woods, waiting and waiting for my parents to show up. Clouds mostly covered the moon. Little flies rushed out of the smoke like the fire was birthing them. For a long time I watched the flies continue to rise up and disperse into the air."

The geese pass again, high above. The sun is at noonpoint. One goose's shadow freezes in place on the roof of the car while the rest of the shadows disappear. The single frozen shadow gets bigger and bigger, becoming more defined. Then the goose itself hits the roof of the car.

Everything stops. Simon gets out of the car and looks at the goose.
