Walking in the Arboretum at Night
Rainie Oet
Rita and Annie, in T-shirts, holding hands, walk an
intermittently lit path, surrounded by rows of dark trees. Each tree is
dedicated to a person that no longer exists in the physical world.
Rita lets go of Annie's hand and sits on a bench. Annie watches Rita for a
while, standing in place. Rita closes her eyes.
Annie sighs and keeps walking down the path, without Rita.
Rita says, "You know, a memory is kinda like a chair. You build it, and then
you sit in it, for a while."
Rita opens her eyes. Annie is still walking away. Rita stays on the bench,
watching Annie get smaller and smaller.
