Me and the Caliph
Judah Crow
Can I tell you what I'm like?
In the tales of the Arabian Nights we read about the Caliph Haroun al-Rashid, who loved to disguise himself in simple clothes and slip out of his palace. He would wander the night streets of Baghdad, unknown, to see what his people were up to. And nobody ever recognized their Caliph until he brought them back to the royal palace to reveal himself.
That is exactly what I am like. Nobody around here recognizes me as a Caliph either. The only difference, when I wander the streets at night, is that my people are never up to anything, except watching Netflix and getting zonked. And—unlike Haroun al-Rashid—I don't return to a palace. I like it out here, among my people. I rented a room, above a muffler shop. Other than that, it's exactly the same.
