One of the first sightings came from a hunter who was trying to locate the report of what he believed to be a series of rifle shots. It turned out to be a gathering of adolescent males, cracking nuts.

They have since been observed on numerous occasions cracking various types of tree-nuts through simple constriction, curling a finger around the husk until it splits. The ensuing crack does indeed bear a marked resemblance to the report of a small-bore rifle fired at some distance.

The index finger of a mature male extends ten inches from the knuckle. The middle finger averages nearly twelve, leading one field observer to note, This hand is a foot.

The line had been used previously during a poker game with his colleagues, where it was greeted with an equal lack of enthusiasm.
