When I have bad thoughts about her, on a night when I'm sleepless at my desk, I always lose a pound or two by the morning.

Then she claps her hands in the mirror like a schoolgirl, pleased. Look! she says. See?

I totter off the bathroom scale and slip my robe back on. The red digital needle swings wildly.

She's brushing her teeth, so I brush too. She gathers a handful of loose pink hair at her nape, and I rinse out my mouth.

Between us, the mirror sparkles with stars that are falling like snow, settling in gentle silvery hills at the bottom.  

She lifts her fist in the air like a flag. A stockinged leg kicks up behind her.

I knew you could do it! she says.
