what our hearts say JJ Peña
my head rests on my date's chest, & we're watching a movie on his busted
couch. i'm more interested in the rhythm beneath his skin than the
explosions on the screen. you have a calm heart, i say, & he
grunts, strokes the back of my head slightly. my ex said my
heart's a blender, a scary thought: i'm resting on swirling sharp
insides. why would he say that? i ask, wondering if his ex only made
that comparison out of spite. a helicopter blows up right after i finish my
sentence. loud on the screen, the fire red, claying up the sky black.
my date reaches over my body, grabs the remote off the coffee table, &
lowers the volume. i look up from his chest & his burnt butter eyes stay
on me as he speaks, cause i got a lot going on inside. hard to figure
out what is what, ya know? just like i know you do.
