On Call Michelle Morouse
You never get used to being on call, the fourth-year student explained. He
didn't say that I'd pray at 3 a.m. to tap an addict's vein on the first try,
that a hospital breakfast at hour twenty-four would be the best ever, that
ten minutes of sleep is better than none, that bowels misbehave after
twenty-nine hours, that I'd look like hell but be too tired to care, or that
nothing would look as good as my bed after thirty-six hours, whether alone
or with an extraordinary someone who could rock the human back into
me.
Michelle Morouse has work in or coming from Passages North, Third Wednesday, Matter Press and
others. She lives in Detroit.
