Dear Wigleaf:

You'd like it here. Not at first: At first you'd be disappointed. Because, despite this being the often-referenced, sometimes-celebrated Silicon Valley, there is nothing particularly exceptional about it. The air here is fresh, and the view is enriched by low mountains and intermittent redwood trees. But otherwise, it's just a series of sprawling California suburbs which happen to host the headquarters of several internet titans. It has dollar stores and sports bars just like anywhere else.

You'd come to enjoy how the reality of this place boldly undercuts its reputation. It is "just fine" here, and that's pretty funny when you think about it.

You'd like it here, also, because there's a rainy season. Because you can appreciate the architecture of umbrellas, the topography of rain clouds, and the clattering roar of a well-timed deluge. Because the rainy season is also the writing season: an excuse to stay in and put down whatever's on your mind. Which is what I'm doing here today.

Sincerely,
Tyler Womack
