Old Flames
Rita Ciresi
You're done with these men. But they'll never be done with you.
They come to you in the middle of the night, when you should be dreaming
of fire trucks or rowboats, volcanoes or tsunamis.
Sometimes they stand in the shadows and watch your dream self do
dream-like things, like send an e-mail over a rotary phone or piss in a
kitchen sink.
Other times they look right through your self, as if she were an invisible
ghost that never deserved to exist.
But most times they slip into bed beside you and become the dream lovers
they never were in real life.
You're done with these men. So why, when you wake, does your body still
ache for everything they were not?
