Lump
Maureen Sherbondy

The dermatologist cut away at the golf-ball-sized lump on Sarah's head. He shipped the specimen to a lab where the pathologist couldn't believe what he saw. An entire mini-world existed in that cyst. A town square, train tracks, cars, cats and dogs, microscopic people.

The lab report said, Town. The dermatologist shrugged.

Sarah said, "I thought I was crazy, hearing voices and train whistles, the rumble of cars, barking in my head."

Now when Sarah tried to sleep, it was too quiet. She rubbed the flat scar. She felt as alone in the world as any person could possibly be.
