The day I received 202 stories from the Longlist, I started to read. I spent
several days doing little else even though the semester had just begun and
there were many more pressing things (and just about everything was more
pressing considering the generous timeline Wigleaf had given
me).
I'd never heard of some of these magazines, and wasn't familiar with the
majority of the writers. I had no idea how much I had missed, how much I'd
been missing.
These stories remind me why I love flash fiction: to compress an experience
into something small that feels enormous is the most challenging work.
Impress me, I'd think, clicking on another link and another. Again and
again, these writers complied.
Mary Miller's new novel, BILOXI, is (just!) out from Liveright. She lives in Oxford, Mississippi.
