Memorial Day
Matthew Barrett

We were halfway through the parade when our grandmother said she'd been married before, to the flag bearer on the World War II float. We asked her when. For a year, she said, adding that Uncle Mark was only our half-uncle. For most of the afternoon we thought of nothing but the flag bearer.

Then Barbara said: "Who the hell is Uncle Mark?"

Matthew Barrett's work has appeared in Timber Journal and Appalachian Journal.
