The machine broke down, and for the first time in years we had to do everything by hand. Of course we'd forgotten how to do this, and most of the people who remembered were either dead, or quickly getting there. So we did nothing, and just let the jobs pile up until they reached the ceiling. Finally, one of us bought a fancy new machine which worked terrifyingly well. So well, in fact, we have no idea how to stop it.
